Hey there, packetcat here again to talk about some Overwatch League. This week was perhaps the least eventful as far as games go but there are things to talk about anyways so let’s get the show on the road.
The Meta
This week’s hero bans were:
- Echo
- Tracer
- Orisa
- Moira
This particular set of bans just led to a return of Mei/Reaper as teams opted for the comfortable. There were a few teams that did try something different (Chengdu for example). We even got to see some classic dive compositions come out and even a bit of the Pharah/Mercy so it wasn’t a total snoozefest.
The Games
This week was a lot of 3-0 Overwatch. There were two games that were not 3-0s and only one of them was a 3-2. Needless to say a lot of one sided series this week. I want to bring your attention to one of these 3-0 series.
Shanghai Dragons vs Seoul Dynasty
Going into this everyone was expecting a hell of series. Two teams that everyone thought were equally matched at the top of their division. Expecting a 5 map series or if we were lucky a 7 map one. But it was not to be. It turned out to be an extremely one sided stomp by the Dragons. It wasn’t even close. The Seoul Dynasty looked lost and unable to counter what the Dragons were throwing at them. By the third map it looked like they had given up. If I had power rankings I would be moving Seoul down after this one, whew lord.
Houston Outlaws vs Dallas Fuel
This one was the only 3-2 series this week and it was certainly a great way to end the week. This series was very back and forth with both teams having great individual and team plays, if you watch one series from this week, this is the one to watch.
Miscellaneous tidbits
Since the theme of the week was one sided series there is another one in particular that is worth mentioning because of just how /sad/ it was to watch. Yep I’m talking about the Florida vs Boston match. I don’t think I’ve watched a series that was this painful in a long time. Boston as a team doesn’t seem to have…anything good going for them. I just feel very bad for them at this point. If there are any Boston fans left at this point, my condolences.
Next week’s hero bans and upcoming tournaments
Next week’s hero bans are:
- McCree
- Widowmaker
- Wrecking Ball
- Mercy
Reminder that hero bans are universal so these apply to OWL, Contenders, Open Division and also the competitive/ranked mode in the game itself. Hitscan mains about to be salty yet again it seems. The banning of Wrecking Ball means that Chengdu is not likely to be fielding Ameng next week.
In more exciting news, we have single-elimination regional tournaments coming up in May. There is a post on the official OWL site with more details along with the schedule for matches for the next few weeks. I am looking forward to the tournaments coming up and also there is the thing about a wider variety of teams playing each other in North America.
See y’all next week!
